    Overview
    Abstract
Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes are the biggest cause of death in the South-East Asia Region (SEAR). The observed rapid rise in NCDs threatens economic and social development as well as lives and health of millions of people in the Region. INDEPTH Network and WHO contributes to the regional efforts aimed at reducing the avoidable burden of NCDs through supporting Member States in applying existing knowledge and mobilizing resources for strengthening integrated NCD prevention programmes focusing on controlling major modifiable risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity at population and individual levels.

Most Member States in the Region are undergoing significant social and demographic changes, marked by rapid urbanization, expanding industrialization, rising income and improved health care. The rapid pace of industrialization, urbanization and globalization is resulting in high prevalence of common risk factors, namely, tobacco use, alcohol abuse, unhealthy diet, obesity and physical inactivity in SEAR.

    Coverage
    Geographic Coverage
The study was conducted in 2005 in nine HDSS sites in Asia, namely Matlab, Mirsarai, Abhoynagar, and WATCH (Bangladesh), Vadu (India), Purworejo (Indonesia), Kanchanaburi (Thailand), Filabavi and Chililab (Vietnam)

    Universe
This multi-site study was designed as a baseline cross-sectional survey with sufficient sample size to measure trends over time. In each of nine HDSS sites in five Asian countries, a sample of 2,000 men and women aged 25-64 years, using the WHO STEPwise approach to Surveillance (http://who.int/chp/steps), was selected using stratified random sampling (in each 10-year interval) from the HDSS sampling frame.
